An MDNR conservation easement preserves 800 acres of environmentally sensitive wetlands in the headwaters of the Huron River watershed. In 2007\, 13 acres of wetland were created and 7 acres of upland buffer restored for wetlands mitigation and are protected with an MDEQ wetland conservation easement. The park’s trails and boardwalks provide viewing access to this preserved natural area. Natural resource management helps to preserve high-quality areas and keep invasive plants under control. In addition to natural areas\, Lyon Oaks County Park also has a golf course and banquet center\, dog park\, picnic areas\, soccer fields and a cricket pitch. \nWe are currently seeking presentations. SUMMARY:2017 Wetlands Conference
DESCRIPTION:Innovations in Wetland Protection and Management\nSeptember 27-29\, 2017\nTreetops Resort\nGaylord\, Michigan \nEVENT OVERVIEW \nThe Michigan Wetlands Association (MWA) held its 2017 Wetlands Conference at the Treetops Resort\, Gaylord\, Michigan.  The conference was open to both members and non-members. We had participation from state\, federal\, and local agencies; private consulting firms; colleges and universities; conservation and environmental organizations; and other interested citizens.  The conference took place at the Treetops Resort\, which is located five miles east of Gaylord amidst abundant and varied scenic and recreational opportunities. \nThe MWA is a statewide organization dedicated to the protection and restoration of wetlands and associated ecosystems through science-based programs\, education and stewardship. The conference included keynote speakers\, general sessions and themed tracks\, and social and networking activities. \n  \nSchedule of Events – Agenda \nTuesday Schedule \nConference Information \nView Abstracts and Download Presentations \nView the 2017 Conference Presenter Bios \n  \nPre-Conference WorkshopsFriday Field TripsPre-Conference Workshops \nPre-Conference Workshops\nTuesday September 26\, 2017 1:00pm – 4:00pm\n\nProtection and Restoration of Wild Rice\nThis workshop will focus on the protection and restoration of Wild Rice in Michigan. We will spend the afternoon learning about the different varieties of wild rice\, or “Manoomin\,” found in Michigan\, habitat and growing conditions\, range\, Tribal significance\, and restoration efforts. After these presentations we will head outside for “Wild Rice Camp” where we will participate in a live demonstration of processing harvested wild rice in the traditional tribal methods. It will be interactive\, engaging\, and outside! \nSiting Wetland Mitigation and Restoration in a Watershed Context\nThis workshop will focus on assessing the functions and values of impacted wetlands using the Landscape Level Wetland Functional Assessment (LLWFA) approach and determining which restoration and mitigation sites will likely replace those functions. Participants will work in a small group setting to analyze impacts to wetlands\, screen potential mitigation sites\, and make decisions on likely outcomes of restoration projects. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) has been working since 2006 on refining and expanding the use of the LLWFA across much of the state. This approach addresses both a current (2005) wetland inventory and a Pre-European Settlement inventory\, to approximate change over time. Twenty watersheds have been thru the complete LLWFA process\, and another ten watersheds are in some phase of completion. In\, 2008 the U.S. Environmental Project Agency (EPA) and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) adopted the Federal Mitigation Rule which placed an emphasis on planning wetland mitigation and restoration projects using the watershed approach. This workshop will cover using MDEQ’s LLWFA\, watershed plans and other information to plan wetland restoration and mitigation projects in the watershed context. \nManagement of Invasive Wetland Species\nWhen invasive species take hold\, they can cause serious environmental damage to wetland ecosystems and can be very difficult to manage. This workshop will focus on management of invasive wetland species and will include case studies on early detection and rapid response\, monitoring and surveying for invasive species\, cooperative invasive species management\, and more. \nWe will participate in a live demonstration of processing harvested wild rice in the traditional tribal method \nFriday Field Trips \nPigeon River Country Tour  12:30pm\nTour the Pigeon River Country (PRC) with Michigan Department of Natural Resources Staff\, including: \n\nSong of the Morning – Visit the site of the dam removal on the Pigeon River and hear the story of its removal. This privately owned dam had failed 3 times in the last century\, each time causing a catastrophic loss of fish. Now after a lawsuit and agreement by the parties\, the dam has been removed\, which has restored the Pigeon River to its natural free flowing state.\nPRC State Forest Headquarters and Discovery Center – We will visit the building complex built by the CCC in 1935\, which houses the offices and visitor center. There we will learn a little of the history of the PRC and its significance in the history of conservation in Michigan. We will also tour the PRC Discovery Center\, which is still under development\, and learn about the latest initiative to tell the story of the PRC and introduce a new generation of outdoor enthusiasts to the “Big Wild”.\nSinkhole Lakes – We will venture out past the Pigeon River to the scenic sinkhole lakes to learn about their unique geology and the challenges of managing these small gems.\nAfter wrapping up at the PRC\, we can head into the thriving town of Gaylord and visit Snowbelt Brewery on our way out of town for a cold beverage.\n\n\nBog and Brew  12:30pm\nCome out and take a walk through a diverse northern Michigan forest that is filled with wildlife\, multiple forest types and has diverse range of wetlands\, at Johannesburg Lewiston Schools. The walk will start off stopping by a bog full of birds and wetland plants\, then wander off into an aspen clear cut and then into an old growth maple forest with vernal pools and depressional wetlands. The walk will finish up by traveling through a thick black spruce wetland forest and ends with an ice cold brew only blocks away. Attendees will meet at entrance of conference building before heading over to site to go over site and parking details. \nTrout Fishing Clinic  12:30pm\nMWA will offer a Trout Fishing Guide based clinic focused on a variety of topics from basic casting\, to tactics\, to insights on area trout fishing opportunities. The clinic will be organized to include something for all skill levels. After the clinic\, the guide will provide a printout detailing several good areas to fish so you can try out your new found skills. Participants are encourage to bring their own gear\, but for the clinic\, the guide can provide equipment for up to 15 individuals. For those willing to bid\, the silent auction will include a ½ day (after the clinic) guided fishing trip with the Guide and MWA Board Member Kurt Brauer. Individuals are responsible for having proper fishing licenses and following all fishing regulations. \n\nPHOTO GALLERY: \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n

The failures on May 19\, 2020\, resulted in the draining of four impounded lakes – Secord\, Smallwood\, Wixom\, and Sanford representing thousands of acres of former lake surface. The loss of these lakes triggered significant ecological changes to surrounding wetlands\, including: \n\nDegradation and alteration of adjacent wetlands driven by shifts in groundwater hydrology.\nFormation of new wetlands on the exposed lakebed bottomlands\, which have undergone natural regeneration and disturbance-driven succession.\n\nIn response to the disaster\, the Four Lakes Task Force (FLTF) (the counties’ legal delegated authority) undertook the long‑term effort to rebuild the Secord\, Smallwood\, Edenville\, and Sanford Dams and restore the four lakes. \nThis field trip will expand on the May 2025 Michigan Wetland Association webinar (available on YouTube)\, Michigan Dam Disaster: Evaluating Wetland Extent on the Bottomlands of a Drained Lake System. Participants will explore: \n\nThe water resources and wetland systems affected by the dam failures.\nBottomlands that have been exposed since 2020 and are undergoing ecological transition.\nThe newly constructed Smallwood Dam and other reconstruction sites.\nOn‑the‑ground views of dams progressing toward substantial completion.\n\nThis rare tour provides a firsthand look at how a major dam failure reshapes ecological systems\, landscapes\, and communities – and how large-scale restoration efforts are unfolding across the Four Lakes region. \nJoin us after the field at a local tavern (cost on your own) to socialize\, network and relax! \nBring weather-appropriate field gear and footwear. \nField Trip #2 \nMosses with Jeremy\nPresenter: Dr. Jeremy Hartsock\nLocation: The H Hotel (Classroom)\nCost: $25 \nDescription: \nMosses and liverworts – collectively referred to as “bryophytes” – are small but fascinating plants that occur in nearly all ecosystems – sometimes in great abundance. Despite their high species diversity\, they are frequently overlooked\, even by skilled botanists because many diagnostic features require magnification to see. This welcoming\, hands-on\, in-classroom workshop is geared toward educators\, botanically inclined amateur naturalists\, and natural resource professionals curious to learn more about common bryophytes. Participants will learn how to use hand lenses and microscopes to recognize some of the most common moss and liverwort genera found in Michigan wetlands\, as well as a few upland species too. \nJoin us after the classroom session at the Three Bridges Distillery & Taproom (cost on your own) to socialize\, network and relax! \n \nField Trip #3 \nExploring Michigan’s Rare Wetlands – Floodplain Forests\nPresenters: Todd Losee\, Mike Pennington\, Tyler Smith\nLocation: Forestview Natural Area\nCost: $25 \nDescription:\nStep into Michigan’s Floodplain Forests\, where the ground squishes\, the trees lean\, and every log looks like it has a story to tell. This guided field trip takes you into one of the state’s most dynamic natural communities—places shaped by rivers that rise\, fall\, and wander. Floodplain Forests are dynamic\, river‑influenced ecosystems that play a vital role in Michigan’s ecological landscape. \nThis field trip introduces participants to the structure\, function\, and characteristic species of these seasonally flooded forests\, emphasizing how hydrology\, soil processes\, and disturbance regimes shape their composition and ecological importance. Through guided instruction\, learners explore the defining features of Floodplain Forests. This field‑based experience is designed for all skill levels and offers an engaging\, on‑the‑ground look at one of Michigan’s most important wetland natural communities. \nJoin us after the field at the Midland Brewing Company (cost on your own) to socialize\, network and relax! \nBring weather-appropriate field gear and footwear. \n \nField Trip #4 \nBats in the Bark: Finding Potential Bat Roost Trees\nPresenters: Nicolette Sexton with Michigan Natural Features Inventory\nLocation: Chippewa Nature Center\nCost: $25 \nDescription:\nJoin bat experts from Michigan Natural Features Inventory and other agency staff for a guided hike through the forests of the Chippewa Nature Center to learn how to identify potential summer bat roost trees in both floodplain and upland forests. Participants will look for key roost characteristics such as loose or peeling bark\, cavities\, cracks\, and broken tops\, and discuss how tree species\, size\, decay\, sunlight\, canopy cover\, and proximity to water influence bat use. The group will practice scanning and documenting potential roosts while exploring how forest management and disturbance affect habitat quality. \nThe trip will also cover practical federal regulatory considerations\, including how the Endangered Species Act applies to listed bats\, when coordination with state and fedearl agencies USFWS may be needed\, and how roost assessments inform project planning\, seasonal clearing limits\, and impact avoidance. Expect a moderately paced walk with frequent stops for close inspection of trees and forest structure. \nJoin us after the field at the Three Bridges Distillery & Taproom (cost on your own) to socialize\, network and relax! \nBring: binoculars\, sturdy hiking boots\, and weather-appropriate field gear. \n\n \nPreliminary Agenda \n\nView Agenda\n  \n \nRegistration: \n\nRegister for the Conference\n  \n \nPresenters: \n\nStay tuned as more information becomes available!
