Out of stock

One day field class covering several common wetland and upland bryophyte species (e.g., mosses and liverworts). This session begins with a lecture to learn the basics of bryophytes such as: ecology, morphology, dispersal, substrates, life cycle and reproduction, etc. Participants will learn how to identify mosses in the field using a hand lens. A hand lens is not required, but strongly recommended. The class will visit several locations and trails (wetland and upland) in the Waterloo state recreation area. Chelsea, Michigan. There will likely be a combination of walking and driving to the various locations to search for mosses.

Instructor Bios:

Jeremy Hartsock, Ph.D. – Jeremy Hartsock is a research scientist at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. While characterizing inland lake aquatic macrophyte communities is his current research focus, he previously spent 10-years studying peatland plant communities in Alberta, Canada. In Canada, he performed bryophyte surveys across a myriad of different wetlands that include marshes, bogs, and several types of fen (e.g., acidic, circumneutral, alkaline and saline). He also participated in efforts to restore and reclaim peat-forming wetlands above areas previously mined for oil sand; helping to engineer landscapes to facilitate moss establishment. He was also a field lead for the Great Lakes Coastal Wetlands Monitoring Program (CWMP) western region. For the CWMP, he carried out wetland plant surveys in coastal marshes and coastal fens along the Lake Superior shoreline.
