2015 MWA Spring Meeting

MWA’s 2015 Spring Meeting will be an opportunity to share organizational and management goals, discuss stewardship responsibilities, and explore partnerships in the long-term management, funding, and protection of Michigan’s wetland resources. The meeting is intended for land conservancies, environmental organizations, local governments, wetland consultants, state and federal regulatory and funding agencies, and private funders. The informational/technical sessions from expert professionals will help increase the capacity of land conservancies and local governments to achieve effective collaboration with funding and regulatory agencies.

The Spring Meeting will be held at Lyon Oaks County Park, which is home to a wetland restoration / preservation project in collaboration with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR), Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), and the Road Commission of Oakland County. An MDNR conservation easement preserves 800 acres of environmentally sensitive wetlands in the headwaters of the Huron River watershed. In 2007, 13 acres of wetland were created and 7 acres of upland buffer restored for wetlands mitigation and are protected with an MDEQ wetland conservation easement. The park’s trails and boardwalks provide viewing access to this preserved natural area. Natural resource management helps to preserve high-quality areas and keep invasive plants under control. In addition to natural areas, Lyon Oaks County Park also has a golf course and banquet center, dog park, picnic areas, soccer fields and a cricket pitch.
